### Shift to Climate-Neutral Architecture

As Europe is moving closer to achieve its climate goals all industries need to bring down their emissions 55% by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. With mycelium materials we don't need to wait decades—the solution is already in our hands.

Around 75% of EU buildings are inefficient. The target is to renovate 35 mln houses by 2030 for carbon neutrality of buildings. In cities like Paris and London, properties must meet specific energy standards to be rented or sold, a trend that’s becoming more common as we approach the Climate Goals deadline. This shift creates a significant market opportunity for renovation, particularly for sustainable insulation materials.
  
Mycelium-based insulation materials combine efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and sustainability. They perfectly demonstrate the circular economy by converting industrial byproducts into high-performing, eco-friendly materials.

### Pilot Factory and Mycelium Insulation Testhouse

In the next stage, Myceen will move into a pilot factory where it will develop and launch industrial production technology. This expansion will enable the company to broaden its product range and advance the commercialization of mycelium-based building materials - the company has several house producers and resellers waiting for the material.

In an upcoming project Myceen’s insulation materials are tested in a pilot house in collaboration with Timber Architecture Research Center ([PAKK](https://pakk.artun.ee/en)). The test house will be ready in autumn 2024 and mycelium insulation performance will be measured and compared with conventional materials. This will give necessary feedback to move forward with house producers who are already waiting in line.

Myceen is proud to have contributed to the museum’s latest exhibition in the Innovo Room of the Future. In collaboration with Northumbria University’s Interaction Research Studio, we developed custom mycelium-based acoustic and insulation wall panels. Diplomacy of Space: The Interiors of Estonian Foreign Missions at the Estonian Museum of Architecture (curated by Karin Paulus in cooperation with the Estonian Association of Interior Architects)

This event explored the messages conveyed by the interiors of Estonia’s various diplomatic missions throughout history and today. These missions range from Helsinki and Vilnius to Abu Dhabi, Singapore and Beijing. Alongside acknowledging the ingenuity of our diplomats, a country also establishes itself abroad through space - embassies, residences and other foreign missions. 
Considering the fact that an embassy is a part of Estonia, it is logical that the interior design reflects this. Therefore, we were very delighted that B210 Architects involved us in the Estonian embassy project in Singapore to emphasise Estonia’s deep relationship with nature and innovation. 
As part of the exhibition, a publication titled “Diplomacy of Space” was presented in cooperation with the Estonian foreign ministry. 
With this project we were able to present our Singapore Blox and on the picture you can see Alar Karis, the president of Estonia, admiring it.

The Venice Design Biennial is a prestigious design festival held in Venice every 2 years, running parallel to The Venice Biennale of Architecture. The 2023 edition was themed “Auto-Exotic”, which challenged traditional notions of exoticism and its evolution. 
The exhibition celebrated innovative design, pushing boundaries and questioning established norms.

The Venice Design Biennial

Berlin Design Week is an annual event that celebrates innovative design concepts and serves as an important platform for the local design scene. It takes place every spring, spanning across various locations in Berlin where national and international designers, cultural institutions, companies, and research institutions showcase their work. The program includes talks, exhibitions, presentations, participatory projects and networking events.  
The 2023 Berlin Design Week was themed “Resilience”. The festival explored how design can adapt in times of crisis. The event space offered room for 140 guests, including Myceen. 



Berlin Design Week 2023


This event is Germany’s largest design event, serving as an international showcase for the Bavarian creative and design industry. The theme of the event in 2023 was “Why Disruption Unleashes Creativity”, focusing on how radical changes can foster innovation and creativity.
Myceen’s participation helped raise awareness about sustainable materials and fostered connections with other designers and architects interested in green building solutions. 


Munich Creative Business Week

The Milano Design Week 2023 was a vibrant event that took place at many different locations in Milano. One of the highlights was the Isola Design Festival focused on the theme “Nothing Happens If Nothing Happens”, emphasising regeneration and sustainable design. Rather than merely showcasing sustainable design products, the festival aimed to inspire change by going beyond the ordinary. Designers and studios gathered to rethink, regenerate, and remediate, creating something truly impactful. It encouraged designers to push boundaries to highlight the importance of regeneration in the world of design. 
Myceen had the honour of presenting our seating block at the Fuorisalone, which is a large structure that is partially outdoors, creating an immersive experience for visitors. Fluorisalone continues to host a variety of design-related activities, exhibitions and pop-up installations, design talks and workshops throughout the year. Definitely worth a visit when in Milan!

Maidla Nature Resort

This event explored the relationship between architecture, food systems and sustainability, featuring various innovative projects and installations. 
Myceen’s installation “Interface Organism” (a term coined by the legendary Paul Stamets) at the exhibition “Edible; Or, The Architecture of Metabolism” in 2022  - showcased the use of mycelium to create sustainable interior elements. The mycelium “eats” wood industry’s waste and grows into the desired forms, highlighting the potential of mycelium as a novel sustainable material. The visitors were able to watch live how the mycelium grows.

Tallinn Architecture Biennale

The Creative Business Cup is an annual global competition that supports and empowers innovative start-ups from over 80 countries. It offers a platform to connect with investors, industry experts and potential collaborators. The event is supported by the city of Copenhagen and the Danish Business Authorities, highlighting its significance in promoting innovation and creativity on a global scale. 
Myceen’s innovative approach earned us the opportunity to represent Estonia and pitch our ideas in the finals to international investors. We won the Impact Prize at the Investor’s Pitch Competition, which recognises start-ups that have a significant positive impact on society and the environment. Needless to say, we were thrilled to be able to take part in this event and even more excited to win the prize "Most investable Start-up" and finish in the TOP 5.

Creative Business Cup

This event brought together over 2000 urban shapers, leaders, entrepreneurs, sustainable cities, media professionals and talent. Helsingborg, a mid-sized city on the Swedish coast overlooking Denmark, is known for its innovation and rapid transformation. Attendees shared change-making experiences, discussed failures not found in reports and acceleration of urban transformation.

Urban Brilliance Fair

The Bruno Product Design award was established in 2006 by the Estonian Association of Designers. The aim is to present innovative, high-standard new products to the public and in addition is an excellent springboard into the international scene.
The award Myceen received was for the Pendant Lamp B Wise in the Human-Environment category in 2022.
The Pendant Lamp B Wise was initially ordered by fintech unicorn Wise for their office in Tallinn. 


BRUNO

The Berlin Design Week in 2022 showcased a diverse range of design projects under the name “Higher Purpose”. The event featured over 150 participants from 42 countries. 
One of the highlights was the exhibition “Standing - A State of Design Perspective”. Myceen had the opportunity to present the Pendant Lamp B Wise and the Blox series. It merged works of fine arts with contemporary design objects, blending low-tech, craftsmanship, and high-tech elements. The exhibition aimed to explore the current state of design and its impact on society through a variety of installations and artworks. Myceen’s participation highlighted the environmental benefits of using mycelium, such as its biodegradability and a low carbon footprint.

Berlin Design Week 2022

Müürileht is an Estonian newspaper that primarily focuses on cultural and societal topics. It has become a significant voice in the Estonian media landscape. Müürileht is known for its engaging and often provocative content, which encourages readers to think more critically about the world around them. It is an important platform for cultural dialogue and intellectual exchange.

The exhibition at Tallinn Design Festival focused on the need for a sustainable future environment and a circular economy. It encouraged people to reconsider human waste materials and re-evaluate them as new resources. The “Future Materials” exhibition and conference in 2019 highlighted innovative approaches to sustainability and the potential for transforming waste into a valuable resource. 
Myceen was yet to be founded, but our co-founders Siim Karro and Erki Nagla were given the opportunity to present their prototypes of mycelium materials, gaining a lot of attention to carry on working and developing this novel material.
